One of the newest hobbies I have picked up recently is gaming. Though I would not consider myself as a hardcore gamer, I do enjoy playing new games.

For my 21st birthday, I decided to buy myself a PlayStation 4 (PS4). What made it all the more special was that it was my first big-item purchase with money I earned from a part-time job during the semester break. Along with the gaming console, I purchased two games: Marvel's Spider-Man and FIFA 19. Both these games were some of the most popular games of 2018.

One of my worries was if gaming would turn into an addiction, as I have heard of some friends who would game for many hours without a break so as to accomplish their missions and advance to the next level.

Were there times I felt like I played too long? Yes. It took some time to get used to having a gaming console so easily accessible at home, but with the build-up of discipline, I learnt how to use the PS4 wisely. My trick is to use it as a reward for when I finish studying a certain chapter, finish a project or completing my homework.

Surprisingly, I find that gaming can teach you important life lessons, such as strategising and perseverance. I remember that there was one particular mission in Spider-Man where my character died 21 times (yes, that is how bad I am in gaming). But through repetition and trying to defeat the enemy in the game through various missions, I finally accomplished the mission. It gave me the same level of joy as solving a mathematical problem (yes, I am a math nerd too).

Overall, I feel that making this major purchase was totally worth it and I can't wait to try out more new games in this amazing console!
